Editorial Policy

Last updated

Aplomb does not report the news. We choose which newsrooms appear in the app, and we publish profiles of those newsrooms and comparisons of news apps. This policy covers both.

What Aplomb Publishes

The app shows official videos published by news organizations on their YouTube channels. We do not edit or cut those videos or add commentary to them, and we always name the outlet and link to its original article. On this website we publish source profiles, a media bias chart, app comparisons and guides.

How We Choose Sources

Every newsroom must meet six criteria, published in full on how we choose news sources. Political lean alone never decides whether an outlet is included.

Bias and Reliability Ratings

We do not rate outlets ourselves. Source profiles and the media bias chart reproduce ratings published by AllSides, Ad Fontes Media and Media Bias/Fact Check, each linked, with the date we checked it.

App Comparisons and Our Conflict of Interest

We make Aplomb, so we have an interest in how it compares with other apps. Every comparison that includes Aplomb carries a disclosure, applies the same criteria to Aplomb as to other apps, never ranks it first by default and never gives it a score. Competitor facts such as prices are checked against each app's own listing and dated.

Independence

Aplomb has no commercial relationship with the outlets it lists. No outlet can pay to be included, to rank higher or to change what we write about it.

We also look at the outlets' own independence: a newsroom must be free from control by a government or by its owner. When an owner's intervention is on record, we review the outlet publicly; the current list is on how we choose news sources.
