Watch News: FAQ

Where do these news videos come from?

Each video is published by the news organization on its official YouTube channel and plays in the official YouTube player. See all trusted news sources.

Can I watch news for free?

Yes, on this page and in the app: Aplomb is free to download and use.

How are today's top stories ranked?

By how many newsrooms are covering them right now, the same ranking as the Today tab in the app. It draws on the news feeds of dozens of newsrooms over the last 30 hours, and recent coverage counts most: a newsroom's headline counts in full when it is new, half after 12 hours and a quarter after a day. Each story shows the video from one of the newsrooms in Aplomb that best shows where it stands now. We read the headlines of a wide range of newsrooms, including some we never show, and some paywalled newspapers whose articles we do not link. How we choose sources.

How often is the feed updated?

The app checks every outlet's official channel for new videos every 15 minutes, and the Today ranking is recalculated every 15 minutes too. This page shows the ranking at the time the site was last published, a few times a day.
