Politico was founded in 2007 to cover Congress, the White House and campaigns in more detail than general outlets could. Its morning newsletter, Playbook, became required reading in Washington, and Politico Pro sells in-depth policy coverage to professionals. The German publisher Axel Springer has owned it since 2021. Axel Springer asks staff to share company principles such as support for the transatlantic alliance; according to 2021 reporting, Politico journalists are not required to sign them. Its best-known scoop was the leaked draft of the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision in May 2022, which Chief Justice John Roberts confirmed was authentic. Raters place it slightly left: Lean Left (-1.20) for AllSides, Left-Center for Media Bias/Fact Check, Middle for Ad Fontes Media. Is Politico biased?
Three people who had helped build Politico, Jim VandeHei, Mike Allen and Roy Schwartz, founded Axios in 2017 around a simple idea: busy readers want the key facts first and the details only if they ask. In 2022 Cox Enterprises bought a 70% stake in a deal that valued Axios at about $525 million; the founders kept running the newsroom, and Cox added funding for Axios Local, its city newsletters. Raters place it slightly left: Lean Left (-1.70) for AllSides, Left-Center for Media Bias/Fact Check, Middle for Ad Fontes Media, with High factual reporting. Is Axios biased?
Semafor launched in 2022, founded by Ben Smith, a former editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed News and media columnist at The New York Times, and Justin Smith, a former chief executive of Bloomberg Media. It covers politics, business and world affairs, with a strong interest in Africa and the Gulf. Its largest early investor was Sam Bankman-Fried, who put in about $10 million of its first $25 million; after FTX collapsed in November 2022, Semafor said it would buy back his stake. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it Least Biased with High factual reporting, AllSides Lean Left (-1.50), and Ad Fontes Media scores it Generally Reliable (39.76), just under its Reliable range. Is Semafor biased?
These outlets grew up on phones, and their writing shows it. Axios uses a house style it calls Smart Brevity: a short opening line, then bolded signposts such as "Why it matters" and bullet points. Semafor splits many stories into labeled parts that keep the facts apart from the reporter's own analysis, and often adds a section with an opposing view. Politico writes longer, for readers who follow policy closely.
The formats are different answers to the same problem: readers who trust news less and have less time for it. Labeling what is fact and what is analysis, as Semafor does, makes a story's structure visible. Cutting it to the essentials, as Axios does, makes it quick. Both are easier to judge than a long article where reporting and interpretation blend.
A legacy newsroom, such as a newspaper or a TV network, built its audience in print or on air and moved online later. A digital-native one started on the web. The difference shows in a few ways:
Short formats leave out context. When a story matters to you, follow an Axios or Semafor summary with a fuller report from a wire service such as AP or a public broadcaster such as NPR. All three outlets write mainly for an American audience, and two of the three lean slightly left on our combined score. And Axios and Semafor publish few short videos, one or two a day at most, so they appear in your feed less often than the big newsrooms.
Semafor is the clearest case. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it Least Biased, AllSides places it Lean Left, and Ad Fontes Media scores it just under its Reliable range. Averaged, it lands inside our center zone, close to its left edge. For Axios and Politico the raters agree more: all three see a slight left lean and solid reliability. Small differences like these are normal, since each rater samples different articles and uses its own method, which is why we show every rating on each profile and plot the average on our media bias chart.
Semafor's videos run in Latest, the app's feed of international newsrooms. Axios and Politico cover mostly American politics, so their reports live in the United States tab. Aplomb alternates newsrooms so no single outlet fills your feed, but Axios and Semafor post fewer videos than the big newsrooms, so you will see them less often.
Politico has been owned by the German publisher Axel Springer since 2021. Cox Enterprises has held about 70% of Axios since 2022, with the founders and staff holding the rest. Semafor is privately held by its founders and investors. All three earn money from advertising and sponsorship, and Axios and Politico also sell subscriptions to professionals.
A newsroom that started online rather than in print or on air. The ones in Aplomb, Axios, Politico and Semafor, employ their own reporters and do original journalism, rather than rewriting other outlets' stories.
On our combined score, Semafor sits in the center zone, while Axios and Politico lean slightly left. All three get a High factual rating from Media Bias/Fact Check. Each source profile shows the three raters one by one.
No. Axios was founded in 2017 by Jim VandeHei, Mike Allen and Roy Schwartz, who had helped build Politico, but the two are separate companies. Cox Enterprises owns about 70% of Axios; Politico belongs to Axel Springer.
Axios publishes few short videos on its official channels, so it appears less often in the feed than outlets that post every day. Aplomb only shows what each newsroom publishes itself.
