Is CBC Biased?

CBC's public funding is a recurring political fight. In April 2023, Twitter labeled CBC "government-funded media" after Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre asked it to; CBC paused its activity on the platform, saying the label misrepresented its independence. The Broadcasting Act guarantees CBC's journalistic independence, and an ombudsman who reports independently of management reviews complaints.

Why CBC Is in Aplomb

CBC News is Canada's largest newsroom, with reporters in every province and territory. It meets our six source criteria, and in the app its videos appear in the Canada section, one of the country tabs (all on by default), rather than in Latest. Radio-Canada, its French-language service, has its own place in the Québec tab. What to watch for: raters see a slight left lean, so it pairs well with The Globe and Mail or a wire service.
