Is Global News Left or Right?

Ad Fontes Media scores the Global News website -3.80 for bias, which it labels Middle. AllSides rates it Lean Left, after an independent review in October 2022, and says it has low confidence in that rating. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it Left-Center, saying its political articles show a slight left bias while its reporting is well sourced and factual.

The most serious dispute over its reporting in recent years began in 2023, when, citing confidential intelligence sources, it reported allegations about Han Dong, then a Liberal MP, and Chinese interference. Dong left the Liberal caucus, denied the allegations and sued Global News and Corus for defamation. The case was settled in June 2025. In a statement, Global News said it recognized the findings of the federal public inquiry into foreign interference, including that classified information corroborated that Dong had not suggested China extend the detention of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, and said its intent had been to report on a matter of public interest while noting that the allegations were unproven.

Why Global News Is in Aplomb

Global News brings national and local Canadian news from the newsroom of Global, one of Canada's two national private TV networks, alongside CTV. It meets our six source criteria; in the app, its videos appear in the Canada tab rather than in Latest. What to watch for: its owner changed hands in October 2026, when Corus's lenders took 99% of the company; no shareholder has a majority, and we will check the new owners' record at each quarterly review. Some of its short videos are lighter or local clips rather than national news.
